What is Somatics??

You may have heard the therapy buzz word of ‘Somatics’ but aren’t quite sure what it actually means.

Somatics is a practice that helps connect the mind-body connection, exploring self-awareness, movement, and overall well-being. It focuses on how our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations are interconnected. The greek term “soma” refers to the body as perceived from within.

Through somatic practice, people can become more attuned to their bodily sensations and emotions, leading to greater self-regulation and stress reduction. This approach is often used to address various physical and psychological issues, from chronic pain and stress-related disorders to enhancing athletic performance and personal growth.

Somatics encourages a deeper understanding of the body’s innate wisdom and its profound connection to mental and emotional well-being.

This can be explored in a number of practices such as Yoga, Breathwork, Stretching, Movement Therapy and body activations.

These techniques often involve gentle movements and exercises designed to release muscular tension, emotional trauma and alleviate chronic pain. In connecting the somatic pathway we shut down an overactive default mode network which brings you to being present, mindful and to have greater self awareness.
